چکیده

This experiment examined the eVects of implicit gender-math stereotyping and implicit gender and math identiWcation on women’s math performance under stereotype threat and reduced threat conditions. Results showed that of the three, only implicit gender-math stereotyping moderated stereotype threat eVects on women’s math performance: women who showed less implicit math-gender stereotyping showed the largest performance diVerence across experimental conditions. These results suggest that women’s implicit associations between gender and math interact with situational cues to inXuence their math performance: women who implicitly associate women more than men with mathematics were most beneWted by reduction of stereotype salience during testing. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. LESSONS LEARNED FROM A CLOCKWORK ORANGE: HOW RETRAINING IMPLICIT ATTITUDES AND STEREOTYPES AFFECTS MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANCE UNDER STEREOTYPE THREAT by

While evidence suggests stereotype threat effects invade conscious levels of processing, less is known about the role that implicit processes play in stereotype threat. Results from four studies indicate that implicit attitudes and stereotypes play a unique role in motivation and performance in stereotype threatening contexts. Women trained to have positive implicit math attitudes exhibited inc...

Teaching Stereotype Threat as a Means of Improving Women’s Math Performance

We tested whether informing women about stereotype threat is a useful intervention to improve their performance in a threatening testing situation. Men and women completed difficult math problems described either as a problem-solving task or as a math test. In a third (teaching-intervention) condition, the test was also described as a math test, but participants were additionally informed that ...

Math achievement, stereotypes, and math self-concepts among elementary-school students in Singapore

Singaporean elementary-school students (N 1⁄4 299) completed Child Implicit Association Tests (Child IAT) as well as explicit measures of gender identity, mathegender stereotypes, and math self-concepts. Students also completed a standardized math achievement test. Three new findings emerged. First, implicit, but not explicit, math self-concepts (math 1⁄4 me) were positively related to math ach...

A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Investigation of the Neural Mechanisms Underlying Women’s Underperformance in Math

This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural structures associated with women’s underperformance on math tasks. Although women in a control condition recruited neural networks that are associated with mathematical learning (i.e., angular gyrus, left parietal and prefrontal cortex), women who were reminded of gender stereotypes about math ability did not recruit t...

Running head: STEREOTYPE THREAT AS REGULATORY MISMATCH Stereotype Threat Reinterpreted as a Regulatory Mismatch

Research documents performance decrements resulting from the activation of a negative task-relevant stereotype. We combine a number of strands of work to identify causes of stereotype threat in a way that allows us to reverse the effects and improve the performance of individuals with negative task-relevant stereotypes. We draw on prior work suggesting that negative stereotypes induce a prevent...
